    A number of spacecraft construction materials are evaluated for the toxic effects of their thermodegradation products on rats. Pyrolysis toxicity testing of pyrolysate fumes establish carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen cyanide as the most common intoxicating agents. Generally, COHb levels of animals expiring in the test chamber suggest higher concentrations of CO are produced with larger samples of most materials

    High Field Studies of Superconducting Fluctuations in High-T_c Cuprates: Evidence for a Small Gap distinct from the Large Pseudogap

    We have used pulsed magnetic fields up to 60Tesla to suppress the contribution of superconducting fluctuations(SCF)to the conductivity above Tc in a series of YBa2Cu3O6+x from the deep pseudogapped state to slight overdoping. Accurate determinations of the SCF conductivity versus temperature and magnetic field have been achieved. Their joint quantitative analyses with respect to Nernst data allow us to establish that thermal fluctuations following the Ginzburg-Landau(GL) scheme are dominant for nearly optimally doped samples. The deduced coherence length xi(T) is in perfect agreement with a gaussian (Aslamazov-Larkin) contribution for 1.01Tc<T<1.2Tc. A phase fluctuation contribution might be invoked for the most underdoped samples in a T range which increases when controlled disorder is introduced by electron irradiation. For all dopings we evidence that the fluctuations are highly damped when increasing T or H. The data permits us to define a field Hc^prime and a temperature Tc^prime above which the SCF are fully suppressed. The analysis of the fluctuation magnetoconductance in the GL approach allows us to determine the critical field Hc2(0). The actual values of Hc^prime(0) and Hc2(0) are found quite similar and both increase with hole doping. These depairing fields, which are directly connected to the magnitude of the SC gap, do therefore follow the Tc variation which is at odds with the sharp decrease of the pseudogap T* with increasing hole doping. This is on line with our previous evidence that T* is not the onset of pairing. We finally propose a three dimensional phase diagram including a disorder axis, which allows to explain most peculiar observations done so far on the diverse cuprate families.Comment: revised version, to be published in Physical Review B.     The relative toxicity of thermodegradation (pyrolysis/combustion) products of aircraft materials was studied. Two approaches were taken to assess the biological activity of the pyrolysis/combustion products of these materials: (1) determine the acute lethality to rats from inhalation of these pyrolysates and (2) examine the tendency for sublethal exposure to the pyrolysates to disrupt behavioral (shock avoidance) performance of exposed rats. The ralative importance of lethality vs. behavioral effects in selection of a material may be dictated by whether or not individuals potentially exposed to such products, would have an opportunity to escape if they were behaviorally capable of doing so. If so, the second parameter would assume greater importance, but if not the first parameter may be of much greater importance in selecting materials

    In chamber thermodegradation procedures were used to access the lethality to rats of the pyrolysis/combustion products of three foams, an adhesive backed metallic tape and RTV silicone rubber adhesive sealant used in spacecraft construction. The role of carbon monoxide in the overall pyrolysate toxicity was also investigated. Post exposure observation of the rats, histological evaluation of selected organs, carbon monoxide concentration in the chamber atmosphere during exposure and the percent carboxyhemoglobin in the animals expiring in the chamber are discussed. Thermogravimetric analysis and dosage response results are given. The lethal effect of the RTV silicon appears to be due to physical obstruction of the respiratory system by particulate matter from pyrolysis

    We follow the evolution of fermion pairing in the dimensional crossover from 3D to 2D as a strongly interacting Fermi gas of 6^6Li atoms becomes confined to a stack of two-dimensional layers formed by a one-dimensional optical lattice. Decreasing the dimensionality leads to the opening of a gap in radio-frequency spectra, even on the BCS-side of a Feshbach resonance. The measured binding energy of fermion pairs closely follows the theoretical two-body binding energy and, in the 2D limit, the zero-temperature mean-field BEC-BCS theory.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Space radiation dose analysis for solar flare of August 1989

    Potential dose and dose rate levels to astronauts in deep space are predicted for the solar flare event which occurred during the week of August 13, 1989. The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-7) monitored the temporal development and energy characteristics of the protons emitted during this event. From these data, differential fluence as a function of energy was obtained in order to analyze the flare using the Langley baryon transport code, BRYNTRN, which describes the interactions of incident protons in matter. Dose equivalent estimates for the skin, ocular lens, and vital organs for 0.5 to 20 g/sq cm of aluminum shielding were predicted. For relatively light shielding (less than 2 g/sq cm), the skin and ocular lens 30-day exposure limits are exceeded within several hours of flare onset. The vital organ (5 cm depth) dose equivalent is exceeded only for the thinnest shield (0.5 g/sq cm). Dose rates (rem/hr) for the skin, ocular lens, and vital organs are also computed
